At the heart of the narrative is Christine Daaé, a talented singer who believes she is being tutored by the Angel of Music. Her childhood friend, Raoul de Chagny, soon realizes that her mysterious mentor is actually a disfigured genius named Erik, who lives in the flooded cellars beneath the Opera and will stop at nothing to claim Christine as his own.
Gaston Leroux blends elements of gothic horror, romance, and detective fiction to create a vivid portrait of the Paris Opera.
